Comfort Food : 5 Kick-Ass Pan-Asian Restaurants in Bangalore

Imagine those days when you just don’t want to put your mind to work. No way do you wish to think about what to eat. You need, want, deserve food but of course without taking too much of stress. This state is called – seeking comfort through food. It’s a topic for another day that this state comes wayyyy too often in my life. Anyhow! There are just 2 comfort food options for me on any given day – 1. Biryani 2. Pan-Asian cuisine

Oooh I am @the__giggler ! I am so hoity toity! Calling it pan-asian cuisine and all ‘eh. There was a time when I used to call it plain simple Chinese food. Anything remotely pan-asian was Chinese for me. Yup! Me. Here. I. yes yes, Faaine! judge the stereotypical me. o_O But now I know and I want you to know too.

Here are my top 5 PAN-ASIAN restaurant picks in Bangalore, trusted blindly. There is a surprise hidden gem at the end. My +1  for you B-)

1. The Fatty Bao, Indiranagar

Since the time this place came to Indiranagar, I have taken almost everyone along with me here and shamelessly ordered the same food over and over again! And whatte ambience this place has, so Bangalore ❤

Open terrace with subtle light, low music, enough space, #AwesomeSauce food and friendly bartenders. You might not even want to move away from the bar stools.

These garlic and prawns momos with just so thin outer layer are so good with the 3 sauces at Fatty Bao! 😳 one more place for THE momos added to THE list 👍🏻

2. Singkong, UB City

Friday lunches made better. One of those rare places where Veg dishes and desserts compete with pork for my appetite…

IMG_2294

Need to stop eating out with these vegetarian friends of mine… They are polluting my palette with good veg food that too paneer based o_O yes I liked this Pandan leaf wrapped spiced cottage cheese starter @singkong_restaurant so much that we ordered for one more (don’t disown me pliss)

IMG_3303

Ohh you dear round dumplings… If only I could taste you in every form and stuffing… One day! 😎

IMG_3259

First time I tried Banoffee Pie =D I like it… Bananaaa!

3. Nasi And Mee Asian Canteen, Koramangala (Malaysian)

This place got launched in Bangalore and suddenly everyone around me was talking about it left- right and centre! Like why?! Why haven’t I eaten at that place? Why didn’t you guys call me?! You don’t like me! Faaine! Go!

After all this and much more cribbing to my friends, they took me there 😀 and we gave out our appreciation to this place in resounding burps 😛

Did you know Nasi means Rice and Mee stands for noodles in Malay?

IMG_4510

Dumpling! Momo! You sound as cute and soft as you taste 😁 especially when you have that light thin covering… Even veg dumplings seem to be good. One more favourite Pan Asian restaurant is here 💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻 @nasiandmee

IMG_4512

Ordering this stir fried fish in honey chilli mustard sauce turned out to be the best decision by us hungry bunch! Ohh the mustard 😍 along with the staple pad Thai noodles @nasiandmee Nasi And Mee, Koramangala, Bangalore

IMG_4511

This place is talk of the pan Asian cuisine town right now and sure as hell it deserves the word! Massaman curry (Thai Muslim style curry with potato and chicken in a mildly spicy coconut sauce) , Thai red curry (veg) and sambal fried rice (Southeast Asian )…

4. Hae Kum Gang, Castle Street, Ashok Nagar (Korean)

Hungry and craving for some warm Asian food after watching a spine chilling movie like Everest we struck gold at this awesome sauce Korean place – Hae Kum Gang. Just above Plan B, this quaint little place is tucked away from the crowds.

The owners are such heart melting humble fellows who opened their kitchen seeing our hungry puppy faces. I can so get used to this!

IMG_3888

Just the 5 side dishes are so cool along with the slightly spicy veg and non veg Chulpan and sticky rice. And of course the largest pan on the table of Mushroom Jeongoi ( glass noodles, amazing mushrooms and other veggies in a non spicy broth). Kid you not, they didn’t stop there. Watermelon pieces dipped in just about right sweet and tangy syrup to make us feel fresh after this royal feast.

5. Taste of Tibet, Dubai Plaza, Brigade Road (Tibetan)

They remind me of the North campus area in Delhi 🙂 Simple, yummy tibetan pork, chicken, lamb dishes with red chilli chutney always accompanied by coke *bliss*

Screen Shot 2016-03-05 at 4.05.09 PM

Chicken momos, chicken Shaptra and tingmo (steamed bun) with that red hot chilli sauce at this small joint on #BrigadeRoad reminded me of the good old DU days and that short sweet trip to Ladakh where my dear friend’s late father had cooked the same tingmo for us on a cold winter night 🙂

Now comes the special +1 for y’all B-) Wait for it….

+1 . LanThai Restaurant , 5th avenue mall, Brigade Road

You might need some serious google maps help to spot this place and then believe your eyes that this is the exact location.

But go ahead and just order the full fish with eyes intact 😛 or the sea food soup with quite literally the sea-food in a soup bowl :O

IMG_0321

One of the worst pics of mine but those tentacles deserved to be shown! P.S. This is quite an old pic 😐 @the__giggler

Tell me more about such Pan-Asian cuisine places for the next comfort seeking day around the corner … Ciao!

Always Hungry….

Ramzan Food Walk Mubarak Ho!

Last time we took a food walk in Koramangala (Bangalore) and this time Mosque Road (Frazer Town) baby! I am becoming a fan of these food trails with each passing day. Thank goodness for those greedy, always hungry, cannibal friends that I have 😀

So let’s roll with this one because you guys still have sometime to catch up on us and not miss out on all the meat you could ever imagine on just 1km stretch of a road (Must. Stop. Salivating. Again!)

Charminar Kabab Paradise

Man Vs Food! First stop of the Ramzan Feast at mosque road was at Charminar for some good old deep fried, minced meat stuffed, egg coated Mughlai Parantha. But looking at the well laid table, we couldn’t stop ourselves from hogging on to some Pepper Chicken, Kalmi Kabab and the unexpectedly good Kadi Gosh (the big piece in the pic on top right).

Richhies Rahamm’s International

Here comes my highlight of the day, Lamb Chops at Richhies.

I don’t give a damn about the picture angle or quality on this one! Watering mouth had to be satiated then and there. High point of the walk was this plate of juicy lamb chops with slightly crispy skin.

Lamb Chops at Rahamm's

Didn’t expect this one but it happened

So we tried some Camel meat kababs as well. Not too proud of it now that I have read a few things but yeah it happened.

Ramzan Food Walk

Chichaba’s Taj Restaurant

Could have not finished it without some Mutton Biryani and what better way to have it than with Nalli Nihari. Sit back, relax and have it at peace 🙂 or in pieces..

Mutton Biryani & Nalli Nihari at Chichaba's Taj

Mutton Biryani & Nalli Nihari at Chichaba’s Taj

Our trip was cut short because of rains but you better not end it without kulfi and then suleimani chai at Taj Tea house. Our sweet paan was good too.

Take a note of these lucky 7 pointers before you start your batmobile engines and tune in the GPS to Mosque Road
1. Reach the place before 7pm to avoid the mad rush.
2. There is some neat lane space for comfortable parking just before Rahamm’s (on your left)
3. Patthar gosh can be made best out of beef only as mutton & chicken have much smaller bones for good stone cooking and cutting. So if anyone is offering you chicken or mutton pathhar gosh, think twice, you might just be getting Chicken 65 heated up on a big stone slab
4. Have a look at the counter behind the cooking slab/ table to judge the hygiene of the place
5. Rahamm’s a bit away from the main food stalls so do not miss out on the lamb chops by avoiding it
6. Check the weather for the day. We had to cut it slightly short for the rain.
7. Lastly but most importantly, take a group of foodie friends with you because you wouldn’t want to finish off the whole plate and feel full on the first stall itself! It will make me really sad 😥
Thank you once again Auni, KungFu, Tom & Compliance. Wouldn’t have been possible for me to try out each and everything without your insatiable greed and gluttony. B-)

North or South, Can’t live without – STREET FOOD (Bangalore isspecial)

The not so commonly found in Bangalore, common man’s food has been found on a common street of a common neighborhood of Koramangala! Woot Woot street food ahoy!

Right under my nose it existed and thrived and reached the level of more than 25 stalls on a stretch of lesser than 1km with some beautiful Bombay street food items too *bedazzled* o_O

Excited main edda excited main edda 😛

Here is a sneak peek at what debauchery happened on the day we explored this small footpath line of stalls next to 5th Block Koramangala ground…

The freshly made peanut chilly chutney and tomato salsa sauce was worth every bite. A plate of 6 momos and unlimited sauces all for Rs.50/-

Masaaledaar lazzatdaar tawa pulao / tadka pulao Bombay style made me realize that there is so much more to explore in Indian cuisine – At Rs. 50/- only

The famous mirchi bhajji of Bangalore with coriander chutney so fresh that you can’t help yourself but ask for atleast 3 servings of just that chutney – At Rs.10/- wonly :O

By this time my hands were full of food and mind had gone numb with so much of happiness that I couldn’t focus on taking pictures. So go ahead, start off with 2 plates of paani puri and don’t miss out on the Bombay sandwich stall with options ranging from toasted and non-toasted versions of chocolate sandwich, pure old bombay sandwich, chinese sandwich and many more.

Polishing off everything with one of my favorite ice-cream flavours, the duet orange and cream stick.

Street Food - Bangalore

Here’s an open challenge to you all… Eat food worth Rs.1000/- on your own from these stalls and I will take you out the next time B-)

P.S. Terms are conditions applied.
First one being that you shouldn’t be a psychopath. You see, I don’t like to compete on that front.
Thank you Vijay & Bhandari 🙂

Pub Food – Don’t you dare ignore it!

If you share the same Jazbaa as me for both drinking and eating and are on a persistent hunt to find these bars/pubs to pitch your tent, then you are well acquainted with the plight of getting good recommendations.

Fret no more human! The world is not flat. Earth rotates on its axis and revolves around the Sun o_O Feeling dizzy? Wait for the big one… There are places in your city to gorge and gulp at the same time!

Others might not believe you right now but change my name to ‘Munna Jajbaati’ if you don’t start believing in the existence of good pubfood post this!

Spread the word because…
You will give the people of Earth an ideal to strive towards. They will race behind you, they will stumble, they will fall. But in time, they will join you in the sun. In time, you will help them accomplish wonders.
1. Toto’s Garage – Pali Hill, Mumbai

I am just too partial to this cozy little place 🙂 but do try out their veg footlong with that awesome chilli sauce or meatballs in mushroom sauce or even the chicken in wire-mesh. And yes as usual, say hi to Pandey ji the man behind the bar 😀

2. Social Offline – Church Street, Bangalore / Colaba, Mumbai & others

I can hog like hell at this place! You will have to gag me to stop ordering food here…

The warm tempting shine of bacon fat and melted cheese of OTT (Over The Top) hot dog does things to you! Ohh it’s so sinfully indecent that I can’t stop looking at it…

A typical sports bar with a small cozy semi open section for the rainy Bangalore days.

Warning: Don’t look at it directly.

5. Irish House – Colaba, Mumbai

Oddly big place from Mumbai standards with nice tap draft beer and popular rock music playing in the background. I liked my beer keg on the table (keep it where I can see it!)

6. Hard Rock Cafe – Bangalore/ Mumbai and many more places

We were the first customers for the first day of breakfast menu option at Hard Rock Cafe Bangalore.

A hearty spread of fresh fruits, all American breakfast platter and pancakes/waffles, still needs a bit of improvement.

But what to do darling? I shall stick to my view of the world

Early mornings are pretty damn beautiful but I am in love with late nights. It’s my choice to be loyal to them.

9. Mother Clucker’s – Indiranagar, Bangalore

I might not have a picture but it is so deeply engraved in my mind, Beef chilli cheese fries at this place hit the right spot baby!

10. Pecos – Bangalore

Old school to the core in the true sense. Try out the pork chilly here, they have it in two different sauces – super hot with green chillies or the subtle one in white sauce.

Now, you dare not ignore Pubfood anymore because it is not the food you deserve, it is the food you need.

Food – Creating a home away from home

If you are staying away from your family and suffer from those homesickness pangs that most of us are familiar with, then a good self cooked meal with standing instructions from mother-on-call can be the perfect remedy for mind, body, heart and soul.

Letting go of the laziness of ordering the so called comfort food from a fast food joint is the first step to happiness. And let me tell you, those useless yet loving bunch of friends can be quite a surprise in the kitchen!

Yes I stay in Bangalore, the city where Cinderella would have not faced any problem whatsoever because everything bloody shuts down at 11:30pm!  Hence, the best option to meet friends is a house party. Woila!

Let’s get started with a cook-off party! *Evil Genius*

If me and my lazy friends can do so much and mor e, just paint a picture yourself…

UB City – The Louis Vuitton of food hubs

Visit other food hubs, then come to UB City, Bangalore and you go #Jazzmatazz I’ve arrived man!

Yup. Have heard people saying this except the ‘#Jazzmatazz’ factor which just plays in my head… It’s the same feeling when you decide that now is my time, I will flaunt it with a Louis Vuitton.

Except that the food at UB City is way more tasteful *Ahem* #JudgeMe

Let us get on with the some good looking, slurp worthy, hot stuff kind (imagine Ryan Gosling in a suit) of food –

1. Cafe Noir

French cuisine restaurant and one of my favorites here. Be ready for a fish-of-the-day overhaul :

2. SingKong

The polished Pan-Asian cuisine experience. Be it the beef/ pork main course dishes, Laksa soup or the seasonal desserts, they have got it sorted.

Recently, my vegetarian friends forced me to try the Pandan leaf wrapped spiced cottage cheese starter. Please don’t disown me for saying this but it was good! o_O

Don’t have great pictures of this place but do have a drink there sometime and try the Beef Ponzu or Galouti Kebab or Mutton Pepper fry 🙂

Barman – The reason to choose a place next time…

“The true measure of ones character is how they treat the barman”
I live by this rule and can’t help but judge you on this. *Yes kill me! I judge at times*  But an amazing barman is always a prerequisite for having a good time at any place and going there again or even suggesting it to your friends.

So let’s start this now I say! Notice them, appreciate them, treat them well and give them a warm hug from my side when you meet them next 🙂

Here are 6 of those superhero barmen I’ve met till now…

1. Pandey Ji @ Toto’s, Bandra, Bombay – The Listener Barman

I had to start with him because of reasons aplenty. It was while having a chat with him when I realized that you remember places by the people you meet there.

Always ready with old monk, coke and a seat at his bar!

2. Sujoy @ Fatty Bao, Indiranagar, Bangalore – The Experience Maker

If you really want to taste a cocktail and not just a concoction of random alcohol types then Sujoy is your man! Now that he has moved to Monkey Bar (Richmond Road, Bangalore) I miss his food and drink suggestions. Ohh and it’s quite difficult to catch hold of him, he keeps changing bars/ pubs every 3-6 months because he feels that he has done his job there 😀

One of those barmen who creates an experience for you along with an off-the-menu cocktail 😉

3. Shetty @ Satya’s , Koramangla, Bangalore – The Modest Barman

Mr. Shetty doesn’t drink himself but makes sure that you go home tipsy. It is so easy for him to become part of your drunk laughs.

All for a good cause Mr. Shetty 🙂

4. Naveen @ Puma Social Club, Indiranagar, Bangalore – The Humble Giant

Hehe Woopes! He is the bouncer there but I loved him for the smirk hiding behind his effort to keep a straight face x-D Must be 3 feet taller than us but almost made him dance. Make them have a bloody good time with you…

5. Anuj @ The Humming Tree, Indiranagar, Bangalore – The Fun One

He made me taste the yummiest chocolate + Beer + Old Monk cocktail. Also, the chilli vodka shots which had to be taken with a side life saver of Apple Juice. Dragon mode on!

Don’t have a good photo of him with me (yet) but just yell out his name the next time you are there…

City Food – The Bangalore Brunch Affair

Bangalore – A lazy, comfortable, laid back city perfect for brunches.

Here are a few places you would want to visit either for food or just to sip on some beer / sangria and enjoy the much talked about Bangalorean weather….

1. Cafe Max

A German cafe sitting on top of Max Muller Bhavan on CMH Road, Indiranagar

As most of the good places in Bangalore, this too is an open air restaurant with an additional benefit of serving white wine sangria and sooper Philadelphia Cheesecake.

b1

2. Truffles Ice N Spice

Popularly recalled for its burgers and breakfast menu this place has two known branches – 5th Block Koramangla & St.Marks road

If you like MEAT and want most of it on one plate then try out their London Mix Grill. The FORMULA X – Sugar and spice and everything nice! Chicken patty in gravy, sausages, ham, sunny side up egg, mashed potatoes, garlic bread, fresh veggies and order for some potato chips as well while you are at it!

b2

3. Om Made Cafe

A lot of you must have heard about the one in Goa. Yes it has an outlet in Koramangla, Bangalore too.

I was excited too but the food turned out to be just about ok as compared to the serene terrace top ambiance of the place. Eggs Benedict not as flavorful as I would have liked them to be. But a nice place to relax.

b3

4. Hole in the wall

This small little place in Koramangla is all about all day breakfast menu! And the portions tell us that they love feeding you 🙂 This wholesome plate of American breakfast makes you feel like a king.

b4

5. Red Fork

Roaming on Indiranagar 12th main, you might miss out on this small place right next to the more popular Daddy’s Deli. This place like the next on the list is not for the cholesterol conscious ones. Look at that piece of juicy pork chops with caramelized onions served with mashed potatoes.

This place has a lot more to offer *slurp*

b5

6. The Only Place

Giving you a feel of the good old Bangalore is The Only Place restaurant. This restaurant is so loved by the meat eaters that a few got highly tensed when there was a rumor about it getting shut down.

Luckily, now we have two of these outlets – 6th main Indiranagar & Church Street.

Big ass burgers to huge ass steaks, you name it they got it. But no pork 😦
